Art by Beth Wilts page 24

Stamps Used:
  • 17023 F Running lovers
  • 50008 A Long stem
  • 51002 I Leaf print

I used the colors from exercise #25 from the color exercises to make this artwork.  Various shades of green and brown were mixed to make the different leaf print using Hansa yellow medium, cadmium red and Cerulean blue.

The inspiration for this piece is Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland.  I transferred the music (copies of the original score by Aaron Copeland, these had to be reversed printed so they would correct facing after being transferred) to the canvas board using matte medium and a transfer tool rather than glue it down.  This allowed me to scrub off some of the transfer to give a more distressed look.  I mixed a bit of white and titan buff paint in with the matte medium that I applied to the copy before transferring.  It made the image brighter and show up more on the dark background.

The long stem flowers were first stamped with yellow ochre and then over stamped with India Ink stamp pad to add detail.  I was pleased with how real the stamped leaf looks like it was printed by a real leaf.  Much easier to use.

For more information on transfers see the new How To page on transfers.

Stamps Used:

  • 20007 I Large music
  • 22004 F Ceres system
  • 40003 H small rough alphabet

I used cadmium red and a tiny bit phthalo green for the dark burgundy. I added more phthalo green to the burgundy to make a red brown for the embossed paper. For the pale background I used titan buff with a touch of cadmium red. The halo is colored with phthalo green with a touch of cadmium red to tone it down.

The inspiration for this piece is Jupiter by Gustav Holst.  My son, Nathan is playing this movement from the Planets Suite this fall with the UC Davis Wind Ensemble.  The halo is a planet chart.

The angel is a transfer of a photograph I took of the angels in the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.  I will add the angel picture to the free image gallery.   I mixed a bit of white and titan buff paint in with the matte medium that I applied to the copy before transferring so the image would be opaque over the halo. I could have glued the angel down. But the transfer "melts" better into the paperbackground.  For more information on transfers see the new How To page on transfers.

Stamps Used:

  • 31005 F Kiss me
  • 31007 G Chassagne Gran Vin
  • 31008 G Chatueau Pichon
  • 31010 H Cuvee Latour
  • 51004 J Scroll pair

I used the colors from exercise #19 from the color exercises to make this artwork.  This included opaque yellow orange , ultramarine blue and violet red.  I had painted the background the week before.  I was able to easily understand and recreate the needed colors when I wanted to change some areas.  The light color in the scroll stamp were painted last with a mixture of white, titan buff and matte medium.  The text was stamped with the darkest paint color from the exercise.  Be sure and wash your stamp right away.  Do not let acrylic paint dry on your stamp or it will not come off.

Stamps Used:

  • 21005 H New gate
  • 44011 F Man with top hat
  • 49003 E Mask
  • 49007 G Corset lady
  • 49008 G Lace border

I used the colors from exercise #41 from the color exercises to make this artwork.  This included Hansa yellow and burnt sienna.

This piece was designed around the Oscar Wilde play " The Importance of Being Earnest". one of the funniest plays I have ever seen.  The picture of Oscar Wilde is a Golden Soft Gel (Gloss) transfer.

Stamps Used:

  • 47001 J Giant bust
  • 47003 I Audience

I used the "With One Palette" column of Somerset Studio Nov/Dec 2003, as my inspiration for this piece.  The colors were sage, gold oxide, alizarin crimson and Naples yellow. The medallion on the left is a cut out from a paper doilie, glue down with matte medium, then painted.

Stamps Used:

  • 48005 G Multi-square design
  • 48006 G Porcelain marks

I used 4 colors of paint for this piece of artwork, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titan buff.  I painted the slide mount, embossed paper cutout and watercolor paper separately using the same palette.  I stamped on the slide mount with India Ink when it was the color I wanted.   I glued the small faces behind the slide mount. Then glued everything down.
